Istanbul wears people out — even those who love it admit as much. By the fourth or fifth day it helps to change scale: go somewhere without crowds or car horns, and be back by evening. These three directions work best for that.
The Princes’ Islands
The quickest way to land in a different rhythm. No cars are allowed; you walk, cycle or take an electric cart. Büyükada has wooden mansions and pine woods, Heybeliada is quieter, and Burgazada is nearly empty.
Ferries leave from Eminönü, ten minutes on foot from the hotel. Crossing takes between forty minutes and an hour and a half depending on the island.
Bursa
Two hours away lies the first Ottoman capital. The Grand Mosque with its twenty domes, the Green Tomb, and Koza Han, where silk was traded for centuries.
In winter people come for skiing on Uludağ; all year round for the thermal springs at Çekirge. And İskender kebab was invented here, which is reason enough for one lunch.
Şile and Ağva
The Black Sea coast, roughly two hours out. Şile has a lighthouse, cliffs and a wide sandy beach; Ağva sits between two rivers, with boats and forest around it. People swim in summer and walk the rest of the year.
On weekdays both towns are almost deserted, which is precisely their appeal.
Planning it
Leave early — before nine for the islands, on the first ferry for Bursa. Aim to return in daylight, especially outside high season when services finish sooner.
But not on your first day
Put a trip like this in the middle or at the end of your stay. Leaving the city makes sense once the city has started to tire you; done too early, it simply takes time away from Istanbul itself.
